Commenting on the publication of the ADASS Spring Survey 2026 today, Emily Holzhausen CBE, Director of Policy and Public Affairs, Carers UK, said:

"It's extremely concerning that we're seeing a decline in investment in carers' support, despite rising need and an increase in carers waiting for a carer's assessment.

“This report echoes yesterday's findings from the CQC assessment of local authorities, that support for unpaid carers is variable depending on where you live.

"Whilst practice between local authorities could improve, it's clear that a severe lack of funding is hampering efforts to provide more care and support. We are deeply concerned that this will impact on carers' health and will push more to breaking point. As our recent Tipping Point research showed, many carers will have no option but to give up work to care because of a lack of reliable, affordable social care.

“The mission of the Casey Commission is critical.  If there is greater investment in social care and breaks for carers, it could transform lives, including helping unpaid carers to combine work and care."
