In Praise of Young Carers – Pearls
(For my daughter, and every child who quietly gives so much)
You made a splash,
As you came into our lives.
Your shine so bright,
Your hugs so tight.
Your sister’s best friend,
So many moments to treasure.
Care and attention were shared;
Not always in equal measure.
You had to be hard.
Immersed in a loving, tempestuous sea.
Understanding when your sister
Needed more of me.
I see you, my pearl—
Including others, cheering them on,
All while weathering you own storms.
Glittering with warmth and compassion,
You bring joy into every action.
Even as a tiny girl,
Dressed in a pink princess gown;
You fearlessly stood up to those
Who would tear others down.
But I also see you,
In those times when you doubt yourself.
When your thoughts are so loud
That you cannot sleep.
When your lustre fades,
And you start to feel beat.
I am here, my precious pearl,
To remind you how important you are.
I will polish and restore your shine—
As you have done for me,
Time after time.
