Today (Thursday 26th September) is BBC Music Day, a UK wide annual celebration of the power of music to change lives. Music events take place up and down the country and many are broadcasted on TV, radio or via the internet.
In line with this year’s theme - music and wellbeing - Carers UK is supporting BBC Music Day by sharing tips and information with carers on connecting - with friends, family and the people they support - through music.
Caring for someone can be demanding. Our research shows eight in ten carers have felt lonely or isolated as a result of their caring responsibilities. Usually living with high levels of stress and exhaustion, many put their own personal needs behind those of their loved ones. Taking a break to listen to music or play an instrument can provide a much-needed source of comfort and a way to relax or connect with other people.
We’ll be posting our tips and information for carers on our social media channels during the day. You can follow our Twitter posts here: twitter.com/CarersUK
Earlier this month we were pleased to announce, with Spirit of 2012, ten UK music projects receiving money from the Carers’ Music Fund. The fund was set up to engage women and girls in music activities to reduce loneliness and improve their mental health and wellbeing. We believe these projects, and the power of music, can help carers take time for themselves and get creative.
