On Wednesday (24th July 2019) Boris Johnson was made Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. In his first speech outside 10 Downing Street he made a clear pledge to fix the country’s social care crisis as a matter of priority, which Carers UK welcomed.
The Chief Executive of Carers UK, Helen Walker, has today written to the Prime Minister congratulating him on his appointment and emphasising how important it is to fund our social care system better. She highlighted the enormous contribution unpaid carers make to society and the UK economy – worth £132 billion every year – and the need to put in place the right policies to better support unpaid carers and the people they care for.
Helen also highlighted that immediate investment is needed to bridge the current funding gap in our social care system, alongside a sustainable vision for delivering social care in the medium and longer term. She said Carers UK would work with the Government to ensure unpaid carers and those they care for get the practical and financial support they deserve.
