Carers Active Together is a simple way for us to unite to support unpaid carers to prioritise their wellbeing, be part of a community, and move more.

61% of carers said they needed more support to be able to look after their health and wellbeing and Carers Active Together is a step towards this.

We know we are stronger together. So, to amplify our collective impact, we’re inviting organisations and professionals working with carers to get involved on the day too.

How can your organisation take part?

There are plenty of ways your organisation can be part of this national day of action. We welcome involvement of any kind!

For example:

  • host an activity session (30-45 minutes is perfect) such as a walk, exercise class or taster session
  • welcome carers to join existing activities you host
  • offer an online or hybrid session for flexibility
  • encourage carers you support to take part in their own way.

The activity you put on doesn’t have to be too sporty or high-energy, just welcoming and inclusive.

We're here for you

To help make it as simple as possible to be part of Carers Active Together we’ve put together a toolkit with everything you’ll need to get started!

Keep it relaxed and pressure-free

Focus on feeling good and having a go — not fitness levels or performance.

Use inclusive, encouraging language

Say things like “go at your own pace”, “no experience needed” and “it’s okay to take a break”.

Greet new guests

A friendly face to greet new people and answer questions can really help remove barriers for carers.

Choose gentle, adaptable activities

Walking, stretching, chair-based movement, yoga or dance all work well.

Offer activities carers can do with the person they care for

Where possible, make it clear that carers are welcome to attend with the person or people they care for, or offer simple adaptations so everyone can take part together.

Build in time to connect

A chat before or after the activity helps carers feel less alone.

Be flexible on the day

Energy levels can change — reassure people they can join in as much or as little as they like.

Think about accessibility early

Consider venues, transport, seating, toilets and online access.

Make it feel fun

Keep the tone light, friendly and informal — enjoyment matters.

Share what carers can do next

Signpost to Carers Active Hub resources or other local activities they can try.

Activities don’t need to be complex or high-energy. The best ones are simple and focused on enjoyment, movement and social connections. Here are some ideas for in person or online activities you could organise.

Walks (indoors or outdoors)

A short, relaxed walk at a local park, green space or indoor venue.

Walks can be fully accessible, go at a slow pace, and include plenty of stopping points. They’re ideal for chatting while moving and can work well for carers attending with the person they care for.

Stretching or seated movement sessions

Light stretching or chair-based movement suitable for all abilities.

These sessions are easy to adapt, work well in community spaces or online, and help carers move gently without feeling intimidated. Emphasise that people can take part seated or standing.

Dance based exercise

Simple, feel-good movement set to music with no routines or experience needed.

This could be gentle dance, movement to music, or themed sessions (e.g. uplifting playlists). Keep it playful and pressure-free, with encouragement to move however feels comfortable.

Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi or mindful movement

Slow, calming movement focused on breathing, balance and relaxation.

These sessions can support both physical and mental wellbeing and are easy to adapt for mixed abilities. Short taster sessions work particularly well for carers trying something new.

Online or at home activities

Virtual sessions that carers can join from home, live or on demand are helpful for those that cannot leave their home or prefer some flexibility.

Aqua-based activities (e.g. Aqua aerobics or aqua zumba)

Gentle, water-based movement that is low-impact and supportive on joints. These activities can feel fun and sociable as well as offer accessible exercise for a wide range of abilities.

Activities for carers and the people they care for

Inclusive activities designed to be done together. For example, gentle walks, seated movement, music and movement, or simple games. Make it clear carers are welcome to attend with the person they care for and that activities can be adapted.

‘Try It’ sessions

Very short tasters (15–20 minutes) that fit easily into carers’ days. Perfect for drop-in events or busy carers, these type of sessions promote that even small amounts of movement count and help reduce barriers to taking part.

Workplace activities for employers and staff

Simple activities that can take place during the working day. For example, a short lunchtime walk, desk-based stretching, an online movement break, or a team wellbeing session that unpaid carers and non-carers can join together.
