Social Security

The Scottish Government will take over responsibility for a range of benefits between 2018 and 2021.These include:

  • Carers Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, Attendance Allowance, Industrial Injuries Benefit and Severe Disablement Allowance
  • Winter Fuel and Cold Weather Payments
  • Funeral Grants
  • Sure Start Maternity Grants (which will be renamed Best Start Grants)
  • Discretionary Housing Payments

They will also have the ability to make variations  to payment of Universal Credit on request including fortnightly payments and direct payments of rent to your landlord.  

The Scottish Government will also create new or supplementary benefits.  The first of these for carers was the Carers Allowance Supplement which will be followed by a Young Carers Grant in 2019. Information on the full timetable of Scottish social security benefits can be found here.
