Social Security

The Scottish Government will take over responsibility for a range of benefits between 2018 and 2021.These include:

  • Carers Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, Attendance Allowance, Industrial Injuries Benefit and Severe Disablement Allowance
  • Winter Fuel and Cold Weather Payments
  • Funeral Grants
  • Best Start Grants, Early Years and School Age Payments
  • Discretionary Housing Payments

They will also have the ability to make variations  to payment of Universal Credit on request including fortnightly payments and direct payments of rent to your landlord.

The Scottish Government will also create new or supplementary benefits.  The first of these for carers was the Carers Allowance Supplement and the Young Carers Grant.  In December 2020, an extra payment became available for parent carers with a severely disabled child to help with winter heating costs and from 22 November 2021, new claims for children with disabilities (who would previously have claimed DLA for children) will become Child Disability Payment.   Information on the full timetable of Scottish social security benefits can be found here.

This section will be updated to provide information on benefits as they are devolved only.  Until the other benefits are fully devolved, you can find information on the ones listed in the bullets above on our UK wide information by clicking here
