Carers Wales responds: Inquiry into loneliness and isolation

by Carers Wales 29 March 2017

Carers Wales have responded to the National Assembly of Wales' inquiry on loneliness and isolation.

The Welsh Government have been given evidence that loneliness and isolation can have a significant impact on physical and mental health particuarly in older people. The inquiry is looking at ways of improving on this issue which may have a beneficial effect on the demand for health and social services.

Carers Wales have responded on behalf of carers without restricting the subject to age.

In our response we have highlighted issues around the additional cost of caring preventing the participation of social activities, effects on a carers health from their caring role and the need for practical support if a carer is going to maintain social relationships.

This inquiry also directly relates to the Social Services and Well being (Wales) Act 2014 as this is part of the legislative framework being examined. We have recommended diligent monitoring of the Act to ensure carers are identified and offered advice, assistence and support which is key to their needs being met.
