With Winter fast approaching and energy bills increasing, Carers Scotland is supporting the Scottish Government's campaign to encourage households to find out about what support is available to help reduce energy bills and stay warm.

Home Energy Scotland provides impartial advice in making your home cheaper to heat – call 0808 808 2282 or visit  Advisors can give you details of free offers, discounts and other support available to help you save money whether you own or rent your home.

Since April 2009, over 800,000 Scots have been offered energy advice or assistance on heating bills and almost 40,000 heating installations have been carried out.  Over 30,000 households received vouchers for new boilers.

What is available?

  • Energy efficiency improvements are on offer to thousands of households within certain areas across Scotland, making the homes cheaper to heat and warmer. If you live within one of these areas then the Scottish Government will help in a range of different ways such as funding and fitting solid wall insulation, under floor insulation or double glazing. The Scottish Government are working with Local Authorities to offer this support, known as Home Energy Efficiency Programmes for Scotland – Area Based Schemes.
  • Support for those who need it most is available from the Home Energy Efficiency Programmes for Scotland – Energy Assistance Scheme. This support will help make the homes of Scotland’s more vulnerable households warmer by funding insulation of lofts, walls, pipes and installing new central heating systems and heating controls.
  • Alongside these Government-funded offers, insulation and heating systems are on offer for people who qualify via the Home Energy Efficiency Programme for Scotland Affordable Warmth Scheme – a scheme run as part of Energy Companies’ legal obligation to help people save energy. Insulation and boilers are available to qualifying low income and vulnerable households whether they own or rent their homes privately.
  • Under the Green Homes Cashback Scheme, up to £1200 is available, including up to £500 for insulation measures, up to £400 for a boiler and up to £300 for other measures (such as glazing, LED lighting and heating controls). The £1200 cash back per household is on offer to all Scots as an incentive to upgrade the energy efficiency of their homes. Whether a home needs double-glazing, floor insulation or any kind of improvement to energy efficiency, whether people own or rent their homes, they can receive cash back of up to £1200.
