Carers Scotland encourages carers to lobby their MSP around Self Directed Support

20 November 2012

The national carer organisations including Carers Scotland have been lobbying MSPs and Ministers for amendments to the Social Care (Self Directed Support) Scotland Bill.

The Bill is now moving towards Stage 3 and we would encourage carers to lobby their own MSP to support the amendments.  We believe that these amendments will provide better support to carers.

These include:

  • changing the current proposals to make it a duty rather than a power on local authorities to offer self directed support to carers
  • removing proposals that would give local authorities discretion to charge carers for this support
  • ensuring that carers are recognised within the Bill and guidance as key partners in the provision of care
  • instructing local authorities to involve and inform carers, where appropriate, about the options for self directed support for the individual they care for
  • strengthening guidance to enable carers to access self directed support to prevent crisis and to provide clear guidance on the employment of close relativves through self directed support.

We would encourage carers to contact their own MSP.  You can find out which MSP represents your constituency and their contact details by clicking here and entering your postcode.

Below is a summary about the amendments we have proposed.  Should you require any further information, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. at Carers Scotland.
