Carers Parliament - theme for 2012

01 May 2012

Report from almost 1000 carers identifies most important theme for debate at Scotland's first Carers Parliament.

Carers have chosen the theme "Services and Support" for debate on 1 October 2012.  This theme will debate the range and availability of services and support that help in their caring role. It will include issues around practical support for carers and the person they care for, challenges faced by different types of carers, carers health and wellbeing, information and advice, finances and breaks from caring.

Carers also rated their most important topics for discussion.  These are:

  • The financial impact of caring including benefits, heating costs and employment
  • Availability of support services for carers including emotional support, information and training to support their caring role
  • Planning for health and social work services working more closely together to provide better support to carers and the person they care for
  • Carers rights – do carers and the professionals know and respect them?
  • Accessing services for the person they care for and how eligibility criteria and charging for services impacts on this
  • Access to suitable, flexible short break and respite support

Carers Scotland is working with a Steering Group of carers, carer organisations and the Scottish Government to develop a programme for the event.  Many carers have said that they would like to take part and we are working to develop a process for carers to apply to be involved.  Details of this will be available shortly in the Carers Parliament section of our website.
