Consultation Response

Transforming Your Care response

23 January 2013
Carers Northern Ireland gave the proposals outlined in Transforming Your Care a cautious welcome but issued a strong warning about the negative impacts on carers if the right supports and investment are not put in place.
Carers Northern Ireland is broadly in favour of reforming health and social care provision in Northern Ireland, and the philosophy of delivering care in communities rather than hospitals and residential settings outlined in Transforming Your Care is to be welcomed.
This is a move that is already happening in mental health. Carers have long understood that the people they look after are better served by being cared for within their own homes, but for this to happen, adequate support from statutory services needs to be in place – in the form of community care services for the patient and direct support for carers such as respite.
As one carer we spoke to in the consultation process said: "Care in the community will end up as care by the carer".
