Carers must not be left carrying the can following care home closures

The Health and Social Care Board has been running a consultation into the future of residential care in Northern Ireland. In our response, while we welcome HSCB's acknowledgement of carers within this consultation, we are left with two major concerns:

Firstly, this consultation makes no clear statement of the Board's expectation of the role of carers in the development of new care arrangements, nor any detailed assessment of what the direct impact on carers will be. We remain fearful that families and carers will be the first option as future care provider, as it is unclear whether there is an adequate care infrastructure in place in both residential and community settings. Carers must not be left carrying the can as a result of care home closures.

Secondly, the huge omission of the role of statutory residential care homes in providing respite to support families and carers is something that must not be ignored. We call on the Board to provide clarity about future respite arrangements.
