Caring with confidence : new programme for carers

06 June 2008
Caring with Confidence, a new programme which will help carers make a positive difference to their life, and that of the person they care for, has today been unveiled.

Previously referred to as the expert carers programme (ECP), Caring with Confidence will enable carers to mix and match how they further develop their knowledge and skills - by taking part in one or more free, local group sessions, by using self learning packs or by accessing online resources.

The name Caring with Confidence has been developed following research commissioned into carers' views about their situation, the concept of a new carers programme and the types of words that resonate with them.

Jenny Poulter, Caring with Confidence project manager, said: "This is an exciting opportunity to build on the training and support already available to carers. We hope to provide what research has shown carers want to help them safeguard their own health and wellbeing and that of the person they care for.

We're now well under way developing the initial face-to-face sessions, which will be delivered for the first time in August and planning how the programme will be rolled out across England. E-learning, self learning packs and online resources, will be available by Christmas."

The sessions will cover topics such as coping with being a carer, managing your finances, balancing your caring role with other aspects of your life and looking after yourself.

The contract to deliver an expert carers programme in England was awarded by the Department of Health to a consortium of five partner organisations in December 2007 - Carers UK, Crossroads Caring for Carers, Expert Patients Programme Community Interest Company (EPP CIC), Partners in Policymaking and Princess Royal Trust for Carers with EPP CIC as the lead administrative organisation. The contract forms part of the government's 'New Deal for Carers', an initiative aimed at improving support for carers.

Notes to Editors

Caring with Confidence is part of the government's 'New Deal for Carers' – an initiative aimed at improving support for carers. As part of these measures, in December 2007, the Department of Health awarded the contract to deliver a new expert carers type programme to a consortium of five partner organisations - Carers UK, Crossroads Caring for Carers, Expert Patients Programme Community Interest Company (EPP CIC), Partners in Policymaking and Princess Royal Trust for Carers. EPP CIC was given the role of lead administrative organisation.

Throughout the development of the programme, consultation amongst carers and experts in the caring sector has been undertaken to inform decisions and the direction of the programme.
