Carers UK responds to new Age UK research on impact of State Pension Age

18 November 2016

Responding to Age UK’s report Working later, waiting longer: The impact of rising State Pension age, Heléna Herklots, Chief Executive of Carers UK said:

“Today’s report rightly highlights carers as a group of people particularly at risk from changes to the State Pension Age. The peak age for caring is 50-64 - over 2 million people in this age bracket are carers [1]. Our ageing population and slashed social care budgets mean more people are picking up caring responsibilities.  Every day we advise people, particularly women, who have left work or reduced hours to care and are left in financial hardship as their savings dwindle. The State Pension Reviewer’s Interim Report has also made clear that carers are a vulnerable group likely to have financial difficulties in later life.

Research suggests that the tipping point for care will come as soon as 2017, where the number of older people in need of care is expected to outstrip the number of working-age family members able to provide it piling more pressure on the working age population to combine work and care [2].

Improving support for carers is now a social and economic imperative made more urgent by any rise in the State Pension Age. The forthcoming Government Carers Strategy must come with resources to make a real difference to carers’ lives. A well-funded NHS and care system – which provides affordable and flexible back-up for families, allowing them to provide care without putting their lives and health on hold is a necessary condition for extending working lives. There must also be more help for families to access information and advice early about available support and the repercussions of leaving work or reducing hours to care.”
