Carers UK reacts to announcement of new NHS funding

18 June 2018

Heléna Herklots CBE, Chief Executive of Carers UK responded to today’s announcement from the Prime Minister for another £20 billion for the NHS, welcoming it but adding that carers had to be at the heart of future plans and urging the Prime Minister to bring forward robust short and long term funding for social care.

“Today’s announcement is welcome and as the detail unfolds we need to see a new deal on the table for unpaid carers in relation to the NHS, where they are at the heart of plans, not at the fringes. One positive move forward would be bringing in new legislation placing a duty on the NHS to identify carers and promote their health and well-being.We look forward to working with Government and NHS England to achieve a bold vision for carers.

“We also need to see a settlement for social care in the short and longer term otherwise a key part of the jigsaw is missing and the pressure on families who provide care will not diminish, but continue to rise. Last year we found 40% of carers providing substantial care had not had a break in the last year. Our research for Carers Week found 72% of carers had suffered poor mental health and 61% poor physical health as a result of caring for family or friends without enough support. The recently published cross Government Action Plan and commitments made by Government to make support for carers a key plank of the Green Paper on social care, must be fully funded."
