Recognition in Election

29 April 2010
Carers UK welcomes the recognition of carers in the election campaign but calls for words to be backed up with urgent action.

Carers UK has welcomed the recognition of carers in the election campaign, following coverage this week in Labour's family manifesto and Liberal Democrats' pledge on breaks for carers.

Imelda Redmond CBE, Chief Executive of Carers UK said:

"We welcome the high-profile attention that carers have received in this election campaign. With all three party leaders expressing their gratitude to carers in both of the Prime Ministerial debates so far, we are starting to see a real recognition of the massive contribution carers make to our families, communities and our economy.

People who care for ill, frail or disabled loved ones save the UK an estimated £87 billion pounds a year, and we are sending a clear message to all parties at this election – it is time to give carers the financial and practical support they deserve. These warm words must be backed up by urgent action in the next Parliament."
