Carers UK responds to local government finance settlement

15 December 2016

Responding to the Provisional Local Government Finance Settlement, Heléna Herklots, Chief Executive of Carers UK, said:

“The social care crisis is placing unsustainable pressure on families who are now providing more care than ever before, but without the support they need. This is leaving carers burnt out, unable to look after their own health and wellbeing and jeopardising their ability to care.

"The measures announced today are a small recognition of the urgent need to address this crisis, but they don’t go far enough.

"The announcement of a new Social Care Support Grant has the potential to redistribute existing money from the New Homes Bonus to councils who need it most. While this is welcome, the £240m in funding available in 17/18 between 152 councils is eclipsed by the £2bn funding black hole for social care.

"While new money will be brought into the system via the rise in the social care precept, the evidence shows this risks perpetuating the postcode lottery in care by allowing the least deprived local authorities to raise the most.

"What is needed now is a long term sustainable funding settlement for social care."
