Meet the fundraiser - Simon's story

My name is Simon Harrison, but most my friends refer to me as Harry. I'm a self-employed tiler from Darlington, Co Durham. In my spare time I follow the Soul music scene and enjoy spending time exploring in my camper van with my wife Plum.

Simon fundraiserSome years ago, I promoted and ran a successful Soul night in a local country hotel. Over the years I've had a number people ask me if would set up and run another Soul Night. The answer to that: only for charity.

Before the pandemic I set out to organise a charity walk and a Soul night in Keswick around Lake Derwent Water. This is one of our favourite walks which takes you through woodland and around the lake and has spectacular views. Like many things, the pandemic put a hold on this, but I have rearranged it for this year. ‘Carers With Soul’ will take place on 28 May 2022 in aid of Carer's UK.

I have chosen to raise funds for Carers UK because I have heard many stories on the struggles of caring. These include children looking after parents or family members before and after they go to school, parents caring for their children with additional needs and partners caring for their spouse. There are so many people caring for their loved ones without much of a break and respite.

Carers care for people with cancer, MND, Parkinson's, heart disease, Alzheimers, Dementia and the list only goes on. The point being, carers are supporting people with many different needs. They are the unsung heroes in life but carers need to be cared for too.

Carers UK is a national charity that help the carers in our communities. I strongly believe in the support that they give to so many different families. Any one of us could be in a position at some point in our lives when we are in need of support from a charity like them.

If you would like to support this worthy cause, please visit my JustGiving page or Facebook page.

For anyone wanting to join us on this beautiful walk, we will be meeting at The Back Bar behind the Inn on the Square Hotel in Keswick Centre on Saturday 28 May 2022 at 10am. Please bring a £10 donation to take part in the walk or donate direct to my JustGiving page.

A special thanks to Ian Grant for securing the venue for this event.
