Importance of a break – Wales spotlight

Investing for the future

As Jocelyn puts it so well in this video, making time to care for yourself is like an investment for the future. Unexpected events in life can throw what can seem like insurmountable challenges in your way – and coping with these, however admirably, should never be at the detriment to your own health and welfare.

Knowing your rights as a carer can make all the difference to your own sense of wellbeing as well as those you care for – and your need to have a break every so often should never be overlooked.

Understanding what you're entitled to

The Social Services and Wellbeing (Wales) Act 2014 came into force on 6 April 2016. The Act repeals the majority of previous community care legislation and intends to transform the way that social services are delivered in Wales. Our assessments guide is designed to help all carers understand their rights today and the responsibilities of local authorities under this Act.

As shown in the video, a break may not necessarily be about you going away yourself – as Posy says, sometimes it's just about "finding some time for yourself".
