Does anyone else use Open Office software? I recently migrated from my old (pirate, shhhh!) version of MS Office and I have been absolutely thrilled by the functionality and the way that it can instantly convert my old MS Office files. Obviously its great that it is free. I'm amazed that individuals, charities and small businesses are still purchasing licenses for MS Office in the mistaken belief that it is a better product: that's money down the drain as far as I can see it.
I have used it in the past but found it more arkward and difficult to use than MS Office. Anyway, now my kids need to use it for homework I need to have MS Office so they can do it as they have been shown at school and so the file types, etc are right when they email in their homework.

All very well so long as it works on your computer. IE9 locks up my folders and Control Panel etc so they are inaccessable and I have to use System Restore to get rid of IE9 to get at them again.

I use OpenOffice at home and have been trialling it at work for the last few months. Although there are a few minor incompatibilities it's a pretty good package. Best of all is the fact that I can open Office 2007 and 2010 files without needing to upgrade.

I think you missed my point, AspieMum, read the small print on the poster. And IE doesn't work on my computer at all as I don't have MS Windoze. I run a Linux system and manage with Chromium and Opera internet browsers.

And I've got along very well with OpenOffice these past few years. I only use it for personal stuff so don't do a lot with it.

I'm still using IE7 for general stuff - was warned that IE8 could cause problems - 7 is a bit slow sometimes but usually OK. and I use Firefox for a couple of the game sites.

(Rob - funnily enough I had the same problem as you when the new forum first came online - could login via Firefox but not via IE - deleted by browser history and then it was OK - weird or what ? Image )

Sprinter / Rob - do you know if OpenOffice will convert MS XP files as well as Office ? I never did get round to installing Office on my computer and still use the XP it came with for letters, spreadsheets etc. I used to have OpenOffice on my work computer and found it useful.

Not sure what you mean by 'XP files', but you can use Open Office to open and edit MS Office files (eg .doc , .txt, .xml, .pps, files), in fact they will work on just about any file type, and you can save them as a MS Office file. Why not just try it, it's free Image

You can also download (for free) MS Word viewer if you just want to view documents.

I think it was probably more that I don't understand the small print correctly. I saw it and I have just looked again and there is nothing I didn't see the first time. May be I tripped up over my Aspergers Syndrome and mis-understood it.
I am really thrilled by the latest version of Open Office, I haven't found a single MS Office file that it cant open yet. I reckon Microsoft needs to watch their back - MS Office is one of their main cash-cow products and once businesses catch on, they could find their market share shrinking rapidly, I mean, why pay for something that is free?

because some of us don't have time to format things and in M$ they are auto formatted Image it also has speech recognition on ms word ultimate (or it used to but I have not tried that with teh combo of windows 7 yet) open office does not do that and my tutors can mark better using ms word that is just a couple of the reasons whyImage

but back to the original question, for years I used FF started when it was still in beta stage and you got an invite...then about 2 years ago it got too glitchy to use and wasn't compatable with other stuff so I switched to IE. IE is being a git in FB at the moment but I cannot log onto this forum with firefox so I now, use both Image

Which version are you using, Excalibur?
