Hi Trisha ... I'm sorry for your loss ... slightly awkward to post a clear a rely on someone else's thread ?

The correct procedure for approaching the DWP for assistance with funeral expenses :

https://www.gov.uk/funeral-payments

If there is a deviation , problems will occur ... as you know have , apparently , occurred.

( A case of following the procedures , then acting ... not vice versa. )

In which case , I would recommend the CAB for their assistance.

https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/

Can they assist in reversing the DWP's decision ?

Only one way to find out.
Trisha,
Condolences on the passing of your Mum. Of course you miss her. Be easy on yourself.

There is info here on appealing re funeral costs, just scroll down to the link https://www.gov.uk/funeral-payments/how-to-claim
Alternatively, you could contact the Citizens Advice Bureau for advice.
