Tell us a bit about yourself here.

Hello everyone, first time for me here, I've been caring for my mum for about 6 months now
Hi Kay, welcome to the forum.
How old is mum? Do you do a lot for her? Do you live with her, or nearby?
Hi Kay
Nice to meet you :)
'Caring for an elderly parent' is probably the most frequent category of carer on this forum, so welcome. Lots of experience here (and not a few scars to show for it, sigh).

Peronsally, I would say the biggest thing to take on board is this: That what we can do for a limited time, is NOT what we can sustain for years and years and years and years and years.....

If I said (somewhat bluntly, but there it is!), 'How long do you envisage being your mum's carer?' what would your answer be?

I 'inherited' my MIL's care at 89 (her not me!), and had she only had a year to live, my care of her would have been VERY different from what it is - she is now four years on from that, and for that reason she is in a care home. She now has deep dementia and it would be impossible for me, even if I were willing, to have her at home with me alone caring for her. So sad, but there it is.

Care of the elderly is often sad, because infirm old age is sad. (That said, of course, your mum may not be 'old' but just infirm - and that's even sadder.....)
