Hi all, new member - Carers UK Forum

Hi all, new member

Tell us a bit about yourself here.
I have been a carer of my 22 year old daughter. She has downs syndrome, a AVD heart defect and eisenmonger syndrome (a lung disease). I care for her full time again now, had to give up working due to relocation and her health deteriating. I have lived in Lincolnshire for nearly a year but have struggled to make new friends as I am unable to get out socially. Like to say Hi to you all out there and may be I will find others to chat with. Image
Hello Pollyanne

Welcome to the forum!

I'm sure that you will find the forum and site very helpful and supportive. The members are a real caring bunch, so you'll feel right at home! With caring it is hard to make friends that is where the forum is a real haven, plus everyone knows what your going through.

Look forward to your posts and getting to know you.

Take care

Hi Pollyanne l also care for my daughter who is 21 she has severe autism and cerebal ataxia
and it is hard to socialise even when you are out you are alwasy waiting for that phone call that says come home now,my daughter also has epilepsy which seems to be controlled one minute and going haywire the next my daughter goes to a day centre 3days a week which is a godsend to me does your daughter have anywhere to go during the day as it would ive to some respite if only for a couple of hours
hope to hear from you again soon
take care
Hi Jean

Thanks for your reply. Yes she started a day centre for one day a week last week. It has taken social services nearly a year to offer me this as I moved from Suffolk. The centre did not want to take her because of her health needs, she sometimes needs oxygen. She seems to like it, but it is always a worry when she starts some where new and like you I am for ever waiting for the phone to ring and checking my mobile has a signal.

She goes to stay at my Mums for a few days a month which is a welcome break. Although she is really well behaved and such a brilliant daughter the strain of keeping an eye on her gets to you sometimes. I had my daughter at 18 so my whole adult life I have been a carer. I did work full time for 6 years as a resettlement worker for the homeless but it became to much for my daughter to go to the day service she attended. As I said I have now relocated and I do not get out much. I tried the local carers group but there was only four people and I did not feel it was really for me.

I just get a bit frustrated that I sit at home and I am not doing any thing with my life.... I have just signed up to do an on line college course so that should keep my mind active. Image
