Hi there - new member - specialist appt today - Carers UK Forum

Hi there - new member - specialist appt today

Tell us a bit about yourself here.
My name is Jenni (jen) my dad is attending a specialist appointment this morning. We have already been to the G.P who set this appt up.
My dad is forgetting many short term things, and nearly set fire to the house last week. He is 75. He is also being treated for Prostrate Cancer ( on a clinical trial) after having an op, radiotherapy and hormone injections.
I was wondering if there could be a link between the two?
Silly question probably, but who knows?

I'm glad ive found this forum, Im supporting him and of course my mom (not well herself) and I also have a 4 yr old with Autism.
This might just help take some strain off! Image
Morning Jen,

Just wanted to wish you a warm welcome to the Forum. Have a browse round and have a look on Roll Call where many of us chat.

You certainly have your hands full and I'm afraid I don't know the answers to your question. Hope you get some answers at the appointment today. Does your dad live alone? Does he / you get any support from Social Services at all?

I care for my mum with dementia and various physical problems. However, you are doing better than me as it took me 2 years to get her to the GP with her memory problems!

Take care,
Hi jenny a big warm welcome
When you go to hospital mention your question as it can be linked as we are all different so our bodies react differently coffeex
Hi Jenny, welcome to the forum. My dad had prostate cancer, he used to be a brilliant mathematician, one of the government's top scientists in his field. He would always help me with maths and my teacher would ask me if dad did it differently, when I understood and the class didn't! Dad's mental ability certainly declined hugely as the cancer took hold and he did a number of really flawed financial decisions. These only came to light when mum's cash card didn't work a few days after dad died!! I used to take him to the hospice day centre, in return for all the days he used to wait outside the school gates for me to take me home after choir/drama/orchestra, but when I said this to him one day, he couldn't remember any of that, which made me feel so sad. Dad was 78 when he died. He only had the hormone "magic bullet". I also have a son with SLD, so I know how tough life must be for you at the moment. Make sure all three carees have had needs assessments and you have a carers assessment from Social Services. It's simply not possible to do so much long term without really good care packages in place.
