Hi my name is Ruth and I became a carer for a friend who has MS. He was in a terrible state when I heard he needed help so I said I would help. He only wanted a person he knew and trusted. Without blowing my own trumpet I have turned his life around. My only problem is I do not earn enough to be able to survive. I also look after my 84 year old mother who has arthritis and struggles to get around. I am not paid to look after my mother! My current wage is carers allowance £67 per week plus a monthly sum from universal credits of £268 pm. I cannot afford to continue in this role but fear my client with MS will go down hill again if I give up. I have had an assessment from social services for direct payments and they say he needs an hour a day !! This I fear would put him back with his motivation and mental health. I’m a really struggling with how to solve this problem. Any advice would be appreciated !!?? :(

Re your friend with MS, he can challenge his Needs Assessment if it does not accurately reflect the care he needs - which may result in him being allocated more care hours.
There is information here on how to do this https://www.scope.org.uk/advice-and-sup ... ment-click

Has your Mum had a Needs Assessment too, so that she can receive paid care support? https://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advic ... assessment
