What is the difference between Severe Disablement Allowance and severe Disability Premium and how does it effect Carers allowance Thanks my brother with Learning Disability 75 Years old and Gets Severe Disablement allowance? Thanks

Carers UK has a brilliant adviceline which will be able to answer your question in full, and make sure you and your brother get everything you are entitled to. My son has SLD, now 37. he has entitlement to SDA - a long extinct benefit no longer available to new claimants.

My situation is slightly different from yours, as my son lives in a flat 14 miles away, with carer support. I had some serious health problems. I am now 64, receiving my pension, so not eligible for Carers Allowance in any case. I know that there are some benefits which someone can only receive if there is no one claiming CA, but not sure which ones. The helpline will have all the information you need. They made me £50 a week better off some years ago, because of their specialist knowledge (despite DWP saying Iasn't eligible!!!) so I'm always happy to sing their praises. If you don't get through by phone, just email them and they will get back to you the following week with a VERY good reply.

Hi Lindi,

My brother, aged 49 yrs, was in receipt of SDA until last year when he assessed for Employment Support Allowance. His SDA was terminated but he was then eligible for the Severe Disability premium.

He gets it as he lives alone ( supported living ) and no-one receives CA for him.

As your brother of pensionable age there may be other regulations that apply, and it really is worth taking Sue and BB's advice about contacting the adviceline.
