PIP is a disaster for disabled people

For information and discussion about benefits
When does reform become dangerous? Over three years ago the Conservatives began to roll out personal independence payments (PIP) – in essence, the mandatory, mass re-testing of disabled and chronically ill people – and the answer is getting stark.

A report released today by Muscular Dystrophy UK is the latest piece of evidence to expose an administrative catastrophe: appointments cancelled at the last minute, lost applications, year-long delays. Two in five respondents report being sent to an assessment centre that wasn’t accessible for disabled people. That’s in order to be tested for a disability benefit.

Near enough anything to do with the DWP these days sets the claimant up to fail.

What has to be understood is the logic the people at the top use is such that they do not differentiate between a person coming off of benefits to re-enter the workplace, from a person that has had their claim stopped.

They are both considered a positive outcome because that person is "off their books".

As for PIP, absolute farce.
Even their so called fast tracking for terminal illness is a sham, I've seen loved ones die before having their claim processed in spite of being prompt with the appropriate paperwork.

The way assessments are done is unethical too.
The so called "health professionals" those private companies hire are basically desk jockeys with xx weeks training that may formerly had worked as a physiotherapist/trainer or perhaps a nurse.

Certainly not having the capacity to overturn endless testimony from acting health professionals/specialists that have dealt with the various conditions/states of health for years/decades.

One person either dying because they can't afford to sustain themselves or through getting so low they take their own life is one too many. We're ranging in the 10,000's by this point.
Are any readers still in denial about the social war that has been raging for more than a decade ?

Witness the British way .... even Joe Public tends to believe the benefit scrounger line as applied to our carees and through them , us ?
It appears to me that it is analogous to a Lottery for some claimants?

Why is it that some people in some parts of the country have no problems?
Are some teams of DWP staff more honest than others?
From today's Independent , a case study of how the switch from DLA to PIP has affected one claimant :

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/ho ... 75126.html

DWP figures show that since PIP launched, more than 160,000 people have had their original rejection overturned at mandatory reconsideration or at appeal. Some 65 per cent of decisions are now overturned at tribunal in the claimant's favour, according to the latest Ministry of Justice statistics.

The DWP was recently accused of setting an “outrageous target” that staff should turn down four out of five benefit appeals, after it emerged staff conducting mandatory reconsideration reviews were held to a “key performance indicator” that said “80 per cent of the original decisions are to be upheld”.

A DWP Spokesperson said in response to Ms Appleby's case: “Decisions for PIP are made after considering all the information provided by the claimant and their GP or medical specialist. Most people leaving the Motability scheme are eligible for a one-off payment of up to £2,000 to help meet their needs.”

A Capita spokesperson said: “We endeavour to schedule both clinic and home assessments as soon as possible. We apologise for the delay on this occasion, and have now scheduled a home assessment.

"The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), not Capita, decides on the level and length of award, taking assessments into consideration alongside all other evidence submitted by a claimant.”

Reaction from Joe Public ?

Yawns ... thinking what has this got to do with me ?

Therein lies the real issue ....
The DWP needs to be re organised surely?

I wish they would re open the local offices so you could have face to face interviews with REAL people
Keyboard locked up then sorry.

When you get correctly awarded PIP. That is good news.

PIP is a good thing.

DWP needs a thorough Shake Up. And sanctions against DWP staff who are dishonest
