Benefit entitlement confused?

Hello im very confused as to whether my husband who has had to give up work can claim esa if i do as well? I get contribution esa support group my husband worked part time but it has become to difficult for him to carry on with his disability affecting him badly.
We have a 4 yr old daughter between us & was claiming working tax credit the reason im asking is he had a 2 month spell off work last year & tried to claim esa but was told he would only get £6 a week? Im very confused? Also as hes my main carer but not claiming carers allowance could he be entitled to a carers premium on top of esa?
