Take a moment to celebrate! new rights for carers from today

Share information, support and advice on all aspects of caring.
Campaigning does work!

From today (1 October 2010), millions of people caring unpaid for disabled people gained new rights under the Equality Act 2010. This will mean that they cannot be directly discriminated against or harrassed because they are caring for someone who is disabled.

Carers UK has fought for and won many rights for carers over the years, but this is a significant step forward that many carers have been waiting for. We will wait with interest to see how it is interpreted through the law in the coming years.

And let's not forget Sharon Coleman - the carer who was the catalyst for these new rights when she took her employer to European court.

Brilliant, and a big thank you to all of you that campaign on the behalf of carers.
That is wonderful news, and thank you so much for the hard work you do for carers Image
Sharon is a true heroine, a modest but determined person who has achieved a huge victory for all carers. Well done!
When will we be given the same out of work benefit as all others who are out of work , also as we have to work for 35 hours per week to claim the out of work benefit is that not discrimination in itself , we are out of work because we are as they sday "disabled by association " perhaps we should be in receipt of the disability benfits, and not an out of work benefit ...

anywho we are now on our way to some kind of "UNIVERSAL CREDIT " not sure if that is for carers , but for ever the pessimist nowt will change for the good ...

Thank you for all your hard work to help us achieve the Equality Act.
How exactly will this help 24/7 carers who cannot work because they have heavy caring responsibilities?

The new Equality Act extends beyond employment law, it is the first time that there has been a legal requirement for the discrimination we experience due to our caring role, i.e. discrimination by association, to be recognised and addressed, well done CUK Image .
