HERO ?

JACK FELL AS HE`D HAVE WISHED THE MOTHER SAID
AND FOLDED THE LETTER THAT SHE READ
THE COLONEL WRITES SO NICELY, SOMETHING BROKE
IN THE TIRED VOICE THAT QUAVERED TO A CHOKE
SHE HALF LOOKED UP,WE MOTHERS ARE SO PROUD
OF OUR DEAD SOLDIERS, THEN HER FACE WAS BOWED.

QUIETLY THE BROTHER OFFICER WENT OUT,
HE`D TOLD THE POOR OLD DEAR SOME GALLANT LIES
THAT SHE WOULD NOURISH ALL HER DAYS, NO DOUBT
FOR WHILE HE COUGHED AND MUMBLED, HER WEAK EYE`S
HAD SHONE WITH GENTLE TRIUMPH , BRIMMED WITH JOY
BECAUSE HE HAD BEEN SO BRAVE HER SOLDIER BOY.

HE THOUGHT HOW "!JACK" COLD FOOTED AND USLESS SWINE
HAD PANICKED DOWN THE TRENCH THAT NIGHT THAT MINE
WENT UP AT WICKED CORNER,HOW HE`D TRIED TO GET SENT HOME
AND HOW AT LAST HE DIED.
BLOWN TO SMALL BITS . AND NO ONE SEAMED TO CARE
EXCEPT FOR THAT LONELY OLD WOMAN WITH THE WHITE HAIR.
NEVER LOOK DOWN ON ANY ONE UNLESS YOU ARE BENDING DOWN TO HELP THEM UP .
This is the poem that my husband often quotes from, as most old soldiers feel it truly sums up the futility of war and its cost .

DULCE ET DECORUM EST

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.

Gas! Gas! Quick boys! - An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime....
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues, -
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old lie:
DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI!
2nd Lt Wilfred Owen M.C. 2nd Manchester Regt, France 1917
IT IS SWEET AND HONORABLE TO DIE FOR THE FATHERLAND .

You dont win wars by dying for your country you win wars by making someone else die for his country
You dont win wars by dying for your country you win wars by making someone else die for his country
That's very close to something General George Patton told his troops, George.

Personally I've found this quotation pretty accurate in recent months]http://www.carersuk.org/images/icon_eek.gif[/img] Image Image
CHOCOLATE MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
A young couple moves into a new neighborhood. The next morning while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside. "That laundry is not very clean", she said. "She doesn't know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap."

Her husband looked on, but remained silent.

Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, the young woman would make the same comments.

About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband:

"Look, she has learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this."

The husband said, "I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows."

And so it is with life. What we see when watching others depends on the purity of the window through which we look.
i like that
I like that very much. Am going to print it out as a message to myself! Image
Peace I ask of thee oh river
peace
peace
peace.
When I learn to live serenely,
cares will cease.
From the hills I gather courage,
vision of the day to be,
strength to lead
and faith to follow -
all are given unto me.
Peace I ask of thee oh river,
peace
peace
peace.
