face to face complaint with social services

Share information, support and advice on all aspects of caring.
I have just had a meeting with three bods from my local authority to try to resolve our complaint about the suitability and lack of day services for our son.
He has severe learning difficulties and autism and we have been writing and complaining for a while now. After one particular episode I contacted the Ombudsman who though sympathetic pointed out that we hadnt been through all 3 stages of the Councils complaint sytem. It always seems a bit bizarre that the Council investigates complaints against itself.
What I found shocking about the meeting ( held in my home at my insistance) was that delays and lack of urgency within Social Services were "acceptable". No one expressed any disbelief that it had taken a year for my son to access a 1 hour day care session. One chap even asked if the option of residential care had been explained. I pointed out that that was in direct oppostion to current Government policy. Its frightening to think he is involved in providing services for people like my son.
I also recieved a huge speech about lack of funding and the problems faced by Social Services because "elderly people are living longer" etc etc. None of these issues are my problem and the fact that they managed to overspend by 13 million is a management issue. What makes me so cross is that people currently recieving services are being made to suffer. A quick look through the authority website minutes of meeting reveals constant references to clawing back money by closing, reducing or raising costs to the disabled. However it was deemed appropriate to employ 3 assistant directors of Social Services each attracting a salary of £75,000.
I will continue my "spat" until I feel someone is actually listening. My heart goes out to all of those who dont have someone to jump up and down and fight for their rights
Hi Daisy

There is a quick overview of complaints system here
http://www.carersuk.org/Information/Hel ... complaints

But you're right that you must go through the Local Authorities own complaints system before you can get to Ombudsman.

There is some background here to the crisis in social care.

Matt
during the last few months of my fathers life we got involved with social services mainly through the army veterans agency to make sure my dad was in good hands at home with me as his carer.
however i went to one meeting as they wanted me to start using a hoist to lift him and they were going to keep him in "rest home" until hoist was delivered stan hated this rest home so they let him out early.
but at the meeting there was 9 people from social services and i just thought to myself what a waste of money this was 9 people at say 25k per year its just a joke.

Thanks for the replies, its just one long fight isnt it?
Ive just heard from the complaints manager asking if I was happy with the outcome of the meeting. Im not, so I am more than happy to go to the next complaint level.
I feel a bit like Bodicea girding her loins for the next battle!

Jean, I'm not sure about the particular conditions your daughter has but if they cause her learning disabilities then she should automatically receive full mobility because she has full care. All you need is a letter from your daughter's GP or specialist stating that she is in " a state of arrested development" and requires guidance or restraint when outside. That should be enough to do it, no matter what.

PM me if you need more info.
