I am an only one and was brought up having a nice childhood wanted for nothing apart from a sibling, then I married my ex and we went into business with my parents so had all the trappings, detahced house, holiday home in Tenerife etc etc but he was a womanising wife beater and we eventually got divorced, didnt get hardly any cash from the house as un-beknown to me he had re-mortgaged up to the hilt, met Paul and we bought a little house but after 5 years were struggling with the high mortgage repayments so went into private rented on a lovely lane, 13 year later the rent went so hig we couldnt manage that so endedup in social housing, we arent on the estate but on the main road backing onto the estate and I love it, they are all down to earth people and I feel secure and safe here. I spent virtually all my free time with my friends on what were considered unsafe estates but never encountered any problems at all, I'm not saying problems don't exist but I think as we get older we view things differently and then there is also the press to feed fear and resentment. My husband grew up on a council estate and I was really attracted to their values which certainly was not one of living off benefits and all the other rubbish we read about.
We would have jumped at the chance if we could have had a council house but they were all being sold off at the time. My father did what Flipflap posted about somewhere on this thread or another, he spent his entire life paying a mortgage, worked through dreadful ill health and died 2 years after retiring and paying off the mortgage!

Not all benefit scroungers live

Not all benefit scroungers live on council estates. Some of them move to remote places like where I live and live the life of riley. There are a lot of people on this island who are happily milking the system for all it's worth and even brag about it. They are not all "working class" either. There are loads of middle class, well educated drop outs here who are actually the best at knowing how to live off the state and charity- they even get their kids into exclusive private boarding schools on charity hand outs. Some of them even have their own begging websites but the biggest joke is that they manipulate themselves into the decision making positions in local politics and are trying to run the place to benefit their" unconventional" lifestyles and positively promote the sink estate scroungers. The local school parent council has just enlisted a scuzzbag who has just been done for a "glassing" at the local pub and a woman who has social workers camped on her doorstep because is a small time porno model. It's like the wicker man here at the moment Image

The Wicker man Image Image Image Love that film!

I was brought up in an end terrace that Mother, who was a self confessed snob, called a semi!
I bought that house of her when she re-married, then moved to Kenilworth where Jill was brought up on a council estate. We bought our own house there. Then moved onto "The Lane", Rouncil Lane, a lovely road full of detached and semi detached houses with trees lining the road.
We then moved to Teignmouth and bought a new semi, then a bungalow in a very salubrious part of town. Struggled to pay a 15% interest mortgage so moved to a five bedroomed terraced house in the town centre. We did B&B from there.
Got into further debt so moved to a two bed terraced house. Jill got ill, went bust and are now in a private rented detached house smack in the middle of town...............could have ended up much worse Image
