Wasn't going to watch it, but Mum didn't want to go to bed so ended up staying up till the end.

I thought Anna Massey was very believable and the storyline rang very true until the end - I don't know any Alzheimer's carer who would actually just leave their caree sat in a hospital waiting room and hope that they would be found by the 'replacement' carer ! Mind you most of the one's I know wouldn't even contemplate a visit to the next town, let alone Australia, without respite being well and truly sorted beforehand !!

But it was a tempting thought that you could just walk away and someone else would be along to pick up the pieces.

Hi

I watched some of the program. While I totally agree that none of the carers I know would go away without having made good arrangements for their carees with several back ups in place I also feel that this is the reason that the Government rely on us to go above and beyond the call of duty to care for our carees. We do not have a contract of employment or basic wages but we are much more reliable than those who do have these contract and wages. We should have breaks but we should not have to go to the extremes of leaving someone in A & E.

I did notice that they were very accurate with the carer and the family member who would do as little as possible, if anything, to help out.

Forgot it was on, so only saw part of it.

So true. Social services know they have us over a barrel - we care - and that leaves us open to be exploited ....

Susie - I agree about the ending, but then again it is fiction:).

They also made reference to the 'pushing them down the stairs' feeling, so the writer knew the subject quite well.
