Companion bus passes no longer allowed?

My wife has a free bus pass due to her illness, with that comes a companion card that is still valid till 13th march 2013.
Went on the bus with her into town today rather than take the car, her pass was accepted by the machine no problem and my companion card also went through, however it wouldnt accept the companion pass on the way home? The bus driver then said that they no longer accept the companion pass and that I now need to pay!

Weve had no notification of this whatsoever.

surly they can't do it in a day, do you think the driver did something so he could get the money?

Thats what im leaning towards although the drivers in Reading dont take cash it all has to go straight into a machine, exact fare only.
