You probably didn't mean it that way but I'm curious about development delay, it seems a strange choice of words for many, bit like learning difficulty, you will most likely think I'm extremely negative but I don't consider my son to have "delayed" development because that suggests it's just late and normal service will be resumed shortly and learning difficulty doesn't come close to describing his problems either, ie being so very old as I am, I would have considered that I had a learning difficutly with Maths in that I find it very hard, but of course today that would be a really strange thing to say.

Vicky, it's interesting you should bring this up: developmental delay often suggests to parents (and some professionals who don't specialise in child development) that there may be a point where someone will "catch up". But it isn't like that at all: it actually means that the developmental milestones are reached later than usual and the child will often get left further and further behind as their difficulties compound. Once delayed, it is never "caught up" - pretty much like trains, buses, etc....if for very different reasons.
