We have an interview with Kate Thomas about her petition about student carers.

We have a section of the site where we interview carer campaigners. It's on there

Brilliant Matt, good interview with Kate thomas,

Just had an email from the Scottish Socialist Party who are supporting the campaign
Just an update: I've got my tribunal tomorrow, i've got no idea how it will go. if I lose I wont be surprised, it'll just be back to the grind and it'll give me more fire in my belly about the CPP and about the Student Carers Campaign. If I win, yeah it'd be great but the DWP will appeal and my money which is rightfully mine will get held back.

I wish it was this simple:

Mr ******, do you provide 35 or more hours per week care to Miss *****?
YES!!
Can you provide evidence of that?
Yes, i'll let you stay at my lovely home for a week and then you can judge for yourselves.
Good luck Alex,we will all be in your corner

Good luck and all the best for tomorrow Alex
Good luck for tomorrow Alex!
I didnt win.

basically I'm a full time student, therefore i obviously Image cant provide enough care for Sarah, therefore not entitled to the benefit.

This is , of course, utter nonsense, how many hours of lectures do you attend each week? Not 35 or 40. Do they assume that full-time for students is 24/7? What about the early mornings, nights, weekends, it's not that hard to provide 35 hours care even for full-time workers. I'm so sorry, Alex, welcome to the 21st century slaves club, many of us provide well in excess of 35 hours yet fall foul of the penny-pinching rules Image .
Well, you gave it your best shot... good on you for trying mate...
Now we must all get behind you and move it into the political/campaign arena ... it is unfair and wrong, and we are 100% in support.

Carers should be encouraged to study, not penalised for it. And you are entitled to have extra support from the state compared with the other students who spend their time supping pints at the Union Bar (like I used to do before I became a good, decent, honest Carer, heh heh!)

Carers UK has helped many major changes in the past - (like married women finally getting carers allowance through a major anti-discrimination campaign) I have a feeling you are eventually going to win this one... though sadly it may well take time and determination...
When, through your own efforts and no help whatsoever from the very people who should be helping, you do qualify, perhaps enough of us could retain you for your first case.
