Given that my MIL in a dementia care home is paying (self-paying) £100 a DAY (and that excludes the CHC nursing care element, which is another £100 plus a week!), even if the LA (were she not self-paying) only paid, say, 80% of the self-pay fee (What IS the percentage, does anyone know, by which the LA 'underpays' the care homes and self-payers 'overpay'??), or even if it were only 50%, that would STILL mean that a family carer on, say, the same 'rate' would be making £50 A DAY to keep their caree out of a residential care home!
That's £350 a week - FAR more 'liveable on', and FAR more likely to induce a family member to keep their caree at home!
There really should be a pilot scheme set up, say for a year, just to see what impact it has on reducing the number of people 'put into a care home' and paid for by the council......AND saving the council some money as well!
It's a win win all round - the LA wins, the carer wins and the caree wins by not having to leave their own home!
