PS - on the general issue of 'eccentricity' versus 'insanity'......I think our attitude can depend on our experiences. Because I was raised by a clinically insane mother, I am almost clinically insanely obsessed with 'normality'......I DREAD the idea of 'going mad'......or doing anything that might look like I'm going mad!!!!!!! (Too late, most of my friends my tell me, sigh....:) :) :) )
PPS - I wonder where all those saints' remnants figure on the scale of 'eccentric to insane'??? All those 'bits of the bodies' from clawed hands, to embalmed corpses etc, venerated and revered (and often dressed up for fiestas as well!). Oh, and polishing the bones of ancestors, like some do in the Orient I believe. Creepy ....or friendly? Any worse/better than taking photos, or a lock of hair (or plaster casts, as the Victorians were keen on!)
Religious relics were big business in the middle ages .
I think some of the saints ended up having many hands indeed (and multiple other body parts!).

Out of slightly morbid curiosity, it would be interesting to see what a DNA test would tell us about just WHO the body parts were originally! (ie, assuming they were never that of the said saint).

The whole business of 'images' etc, (as in, 3-D images), whether 'idols' or 'dolls' or 'relics' or totems' or 'statues' or 'androids' etc etc etc, is a really fascinating one - there's definitely a deep human 'drive' or 'need' to relate to 'artificial humans' (or 'gods' of course!). They seem to exist in every culture, throughout history (and prehistory)
