On-Going catheter problem.

Socialise and chat about other areas of your life
Dad is 91 and had Foley catheter for 7 years + with a lot of problems,we do get it blocked up every week of might just get 2 weeks, size 16 and now for last 6 weeks tried the open end one size 16 but still gets blocked and below is what they have tried.

1......catheter types.
2......bladder wash from twice a week and even the Double Suby-g one but it still blocked (holes don't block it's the tube inside)
3......more urine test than ever and last one being 7-5-20 and all clear.
4......blood test 3 months ago and all fine.
5......(This is the one i want to know more about) PUBS.......purple urine bag syndrome......had for 3 years and never solved.
6......No medication at all and had got Dementia for last 6 months or just over and 24/7 in bed since November 2019 very weak.
As no one can solve the Debris dad has and a lot of it in last 3 years even had PH level done and tried Lemon Barley.
Why this Purple bag as above no one in 3 years can solve it and could this be not helping matters if not the main problem being it's that purple you can't see the urine in it, very dark purple and start seeing it change the bag colour after bag change in 1 day, urine is normal when you take it out just it turns the bag this colour,i have read loads on this about indigo colour but why in last 3 years and not the 4 years before.
.........PLEASE ANY ADVICE ON THIS AS DAD IS VERY,VERY WEAK NOW WITH MAINLY OLD AGE AND DEMENTIA.
Thanks
Jason,.

Has the doctor arranged Continuing Healthcare for you, so you can safely and happily take a break from caring.
it sounds as though dad is nearing the end of his life, you need someone to help you at home.

Yes its all arranged 100% and all dads checks are all A1 just very tired and then add the Dementia onto it being confused etc.

Dad still eats and drinks very well, drinks 1 litre to 1.5 each day and a good large breakfast 60g bowel and biscuits and dinner, not a massive dinner but a good size for his age like a full tin of chicken/veg Big soup which i grind up the chunky bits with a round of bread in there or things like fish breaded cod ground up or 3 fish cakes, someday it can be hard with not a lot but this is normal for dad for months.

I would like to get the bottom of this purple bag as there is something but what??????

Also catheter changed last few days after 6 days this new open end one.

Be VERY AWARE OF THESE OPEN END FOLEY CATHETER they have a bad design fault........
It was flushed twice as dad kept pushing with nothing in bag but when flushed it was ok and was getting to dad.
The open end only has 2 side holes and no tip but when you flush being no tip it cleans the open end and not the 2 side holes as no tip blocked no resistance so it just goes straight through and then nurse thinks it's ok on 2 attempts and flushed.
3rd time i rang i said change catheter and put the old one in with 3 holes and tip blocked which we used for years and when this open ended one removed the 2 holes were blocked as i said and said this to the nurse and she agreed whit what i said to her.
This purple bag i would like to get the bottom of it in some way to see why as read my first post on here and you will see no one knows what is causing it over the past 3 years.
Google "purple urine" and you will find the answer.
I can't help with the PBS, but I'll be looking into it as my wife has purple staining in her bag sometimes. Not as dramatic or extensive as some of the pics I've seen on google, but definite purple staining. I've been trying find an association with food and drink, but unsuccessfully so far, she does drink a lot of those weird fruit teas, so it could be those causing it with her.

As the person above says google it i would be very careful what you search for with regards to a lot of stuff as there not true and don't add up and that's coming from me a carer for 13+ years mom and now dad and also dealing with loads of stuff and being lately Dementia and a catheter for over 7 years,im just trying to say don't believe all you read as it will get you down as it did me.
My thing is now is helping the drinking part as he does drink but cough sometimes after as we have the ''thick up'' to make the water thicker and helps but there is always mucus/water in his throat, most time if not always he eats food A1 when i feed him ground up a bit as he has no teeth to chew for years, thinking of warm drinks and make it thicker but not tea like a lemon barley type, also all his life he has had very bad sinus problems, when young bone scrape and grew back and the old red hot poker to burn hairs and stuff when he was young but no good, tried all stuff now but cant smell/breath up his nose so the mucus either goes solid in his nose or goes into his throat and he coughs it to loosen it and he says its a horrible taste.

There are 2 main things for PUBS and that UTI and Medication but if neither it's a mystery as no one seems to know.
What i know is it something to do with blood and colour which even if you can't see it with a catheter 99% there is some very slight there caused by it and indigo which is a blue and mixed together is of cause purple but as above no medication and no UTI.
I want to know what is making the body make this indigo chemical or something like that name that dyes the bag tube and bag purple,is it just the person getting older as 91 and had it from 88 area or the catheter being in so long 7+years i would like to know.
