How many words does your dog know?

My best friend is a retired Guide Dog and she is very very clever.

But I am sure most dog owners have a great rapport with their animals

My dog knows what I'm doing and where I'm going before I get there myself. She has trained me incredibly well She speaks to me with her eyes and with a huge repertoire of vocal arrangements- anything but a bark really, sometimes a subtle audible breath, and if I ignore her the volumesrises by increments until I obey.
I chat to her all the time so she kind of knows sentences sometimes more than words . My cat friend things I make it all up but only dog people understand.
When I first had her we progressed from beginners training classes and graduated from advanced course later on. I remember having to teach her to relax when you stepped over her and she has truly mastered this technique. Now she occupies every doorway before you get there and has trained nurses and carers to step over her so she doesn't have to move. Imagine a large Greyhound with a shaggy long coat down her back and a wider girth
When she was young we also tried agility and she would run up the top of the A frame and being a sight hound instead of coming down again she would just perch on the top for a better view of all the field. When it came to going through the tunnel she lay down in the middle and stopped for a nap.

My daughter's dog is fabulous! If they tell her we are going to Nanny's she is very excited. Leads them to mine.Knows where I keep her treats, understands the word. She knows when the family are on their way home before anyone else.
She also is crafty! If my daughter is on the phone, she will sneak into the bed, even though it's not allowed.

Then fifty years ago my first dog, there is a very funny story.

She was a five month old puppy and she was a birthday present for me.
At supper time the first night she was with us, we had tea and toast.
A tray of plates and the tea pot was brought into the living room.
Next thing we heard there was a crash in the hall. Trixie was carrying her water bowl in from the kitchen when she must have dropped it. She wanted to b a full member of the family and drink with us.

We had to have our 17 year old dog put to sleep a year ago. He was able to understand the words walk, cheese, lead, out, car and of course "here comes so and so" he would go nuts if a family member was on the way home.

He also used to watch what we were doing all the time. If he saw my husband fetch the bucket from the garage he just knew he was going to wash the car and he knew it meant he could go and sit in the car. Don't ask me why sitting in a car parked in a driveway is exciting but he loved it. he usually fell asleep and had to be woken up when hubby finished.

Colin - when I was about 17 I bought a springer spaniel as I had always wanted a dog. My mum was Ok but my Dad wasn't happy. As time went on my Dad softened and the dog adored him for some reason. My Dad used to make a big mug of tea for her every morning and pour it in her bowl. Some days he would pretend he had forgotten but the dog soon let him know.
