How do I help my son find a job?

My son was furloughed and then paid off. He worked in Digital Media and Marketing. He's had a couple of interviews but they have come to nothing. For a job he was said he would get called for interview but was emailed today to say he wasn't the right fit and they had found a candidate. I can tell he is becoming a bit depressed. I've told him he just needs to take any job he can. He also has admin experience. He is a clever boy, very articulate and his computer and design skills are amazing but he just won't market himself. How can I help?

Parents - anyone else, really - can have only so much influence. After that it's down to your son - whether he can accept your advice, or has the confidence, or is willing to try something else outside his usual field. As well as the fact that digital media and marketing are one of those areas where if you go into a different line of work for a while they consider you to be not good enough, and/or out of date because you effectively left the market for a while.

To be honest, if he wants to get back into that field he needs to send his CV and any examples of his work he might have available to every company working in the field in his travel to work range. Don't wait for a job to turn up - go out looking for it. That's the sort of field where that approach earns extra Brownie points.

Well it seems to me the younger generation use all the social media plat forms. The quirkier the post the better it will stand out.

I'm sorry to hear your son is finding it difficult at the moment, you've certainly come to the right place to get advice and ideas from other carers who have or are experiencing a similar situation to yourself. You’ve done what you can - he needs to accept anything at this stage. Or, retrain and start a new life. Maybe IT or business teacher?
Or, a job to step into tomorrow and earn £50k+ by the end of the year would be recruitment or sales. He could contact companies who specialise in marketing or media recruitment. They try new people all the time, as they don’t always work out.

I would just like to add - encourage him to have a social life. He needs to get out and talk to friends and have something to look forward to.

I spent months looking for a new job. Walking in and handing out applications, doing applications on line and in store. I have military service on my application and not even Walmart would hire me. I had a few interviews but they never called me back. It gets depressing and hard. I'm so lucky my husband supported me emotionally through that time. Try getting him to go to therapy. That maybe all he needs. My dad used to nag me and I'd get angry and then break down crying later. I'm currently going back to school to try and get a job after I have some degree.
