Advice on rose bush

To all of you experienced gardeners
I have the most beautiful deeply scented rose bush. It's stopped producing buds. Just growing leaves. Shall I cut it right back and hope for a regrowth next year?
The other 2 roses are still producing, ( one bought for me by a dear friend) I deadhead them frequently, and gave all 3 a feed.
Don't want to cut back then lose it.

Do you know what rose it is? Some "repeat flower" whilst some only produce one flush of flowers each summer.

Not really the right time for rose pruning - a normal floribunda/hybrid tea rose would be cut back by about half in early winter (to reduce rocking by the wind), then a proper prune in early spring. Pruning of other roses is somewhat more complicated, but if you know what type of rose it is, I can look up what needs to be done inn one of my numerous gardening books!

Mulch annually with well-rotted manure or compost. As a shrub rose, it’s best pruned in late summer, after flowering has finished.

Prune most stems lightly. To encourage young, vigorous growth, cut back a few of the oldest stems each year.

Hi Pet, glad you have had a knowledgeable reply as I don't know much about roses, my Mum grows some, but I never have. Probably because they always seemed a faff! I used to love making rose petal perfume as a child, though.
S sometimes buys me a miniature rose though at Christmas. One is thriving on neglect in the border and has little red roses on it, quite by luck.

I have a hydrangea in a tub and this is the first year it hasn't flowered. Your post has reminded me, maybe any readers can suggest possible causes and solutions. It's pot cracked / split and I had to re pot it, but it looks healthy enough, so wouldn't have thought it was that.

Pet, my mum and dad told me that after a rose stem has flowered, you should cut the stem down to the just above the lowest joint of that stem. Then a new shoot, or two, regrow from the joint.

With hydrangeas, I do the same.
Hydrangeas love water, so be sure to put you pot in a deep saucer and fill the saucer full of water. When all the water has gone, top it up again.
In extremely dry periods, half fill a bucket with water, and put the pot in the bucket. It will probably float to start with, then gradually sink as the water soaks deep into the compost, and leave it there for a couple of hours to have a good drink.
If you want more hydrangeas, this is a good time to take cuttings.
When you are pruning the plant, cut a 6" length. Strip all the leaves, apart from the ones at the top joint.

The slide the stick into the side of the pot, alongside the parent plant. One of our radio garden presenters used to say if you put a cutting "next to mum" it would always get the treatment it needed, if you water the parent, the baby gets a drink etc.

I have a Getrude Jeykyll who is now about 20 years old. She is at her best in June /July and then sometimes gives me a few odd extra blooms but it varies from year to year.
I always pinch off the dead heads just below the flower or cut back to the next leaf. Then in Autumn or winter or by next March she gets cut back each stem by at least half. Sometimes I take out a whole old shoot if it's getting too hard and woody.
She's very very difficult to kill.
When cutting a stem back make the cut just above an outward facing bud so she shoots again outwards rather than inward or crossing
She's happier being big then kept too neat and tidy
The pic is mine taken this July. She's a standard (grown on a tall stem)and has to be propped up as she has so many flowers

Thanks for all of the advice. It such a fragrant rose.. I've had a check on it over the last couple of days, and it has buds!! My other to roses are still in bloom . Princess Alexandra and wildfire. This year a red rose popped up that I wasn't aware of.
Do sometimes feel I've achieved in the garden, as DD said in the summer it looked like one of those gardens you charge people to look at. It's certainly not. Her way of complimenting me. Have times when I don't want to be bothered then others it's a switch off. Having a try with winter pansies and viola when they arrive. I can here hubby you let me do it all those years and you CAN do it!
