End of the road for tax discs in six weeks

Thought drivers among you would find this of interest.

Car tax discs are to be scrapped in six weeks time but half of all UK drivers have no clue a survey claims.

The little circle of paper, which has been displayed in windscreens since 1921, will vanish from October 1 as Vehicle Excise Duty is brought into the modern age.

The changes were announced by Chancellor George Osborne late last year. But a survey from financial advice website money.co.uk claims 50 per cent of drivers have no idea it's going to happen.

Nearly a third of said they will not even try to find out what the new rules are, according to the poll, while six per cent think the changes are not coming into effect until next year.

Sadly they are only scrapping the discs, not the tax. However if you drive a vehicle pre 1974 then tax is free anyhow, and of course if you meet the criteria for tax free due to disability.

I want to know how they are going to catch the tax dodgers ?

Under the current system it is quite easy for the police or traffic wardens to spot an out of date tax disc or a car with no disc at all on their patrols; or, indeed, for a member of the public to report such a vehicle. So how many vehicles are going to be driven around untaxed ? And how much extra are they going to tax those of us who stay within the law to make up the shortfall ?

Apart from anything else I use mine to remind me when my MOT is due (they're both due in the same month).
