I'm dreadful - I either read 'rubbish' (and I mean 'rubbish'!) fiction, real popcorn stuff, or I read (very slowly! ) history non-fiction (not as erudite as Henrietta's mind!), but more 'popular history'. I love 'history of the world' type books.
I find, as I age, I simply haven't the patience to get into 'good fiction'. I certainly can NEVER read crime novels - partly because these days they seem to be horrendous gruesome, so many of them (ditto on the telly!), but mostly because I am far too impatient not to immediately read the last chapter to find out who did it....
I have a few 'fave' authors that I re-read over and over again, from Jane Austen (joy!) to Georgette Heyer, to Brenda Jagger to Eva Ibbotson and even my fave Mills and Boon vintage authors. I know them inside out by now, but they are very comforting and enjoyable to read.
I don't like taking risks on new authors any more alas.
