Carers break

Socialise and chat about other areas of your life
Hi I am utterly exhausted, as my poorly Husband has cancer, of prostate, Bones & lung.I am lucky to have a carers break coming up which I hope to have in June, but I don't feel it's long enough.two days.Is there another charity that might be able to help me top this break up or help me at another break? Thank you regards Amanda h
Amandah, are you getting any support from a hospice, MacMillan, Continuing Healthcare? Maybe some nursing home respite for a week should be arranged.
My Husband had a meeting with our social service's & they said he does not qualify for continuing health care yet.!! I will see what Macmillan cancer support say.Thank you regards Amandah
It's NOT Social Services decision to make. They have no medical training. Even if he doesn't qualify at the moment, it's still worth having a proper checklist, so that any future assessment will show if there is any deterioration, and how much. Ask the GP to arrange the checklist assessment, if Fast Track is not applicable.
You can download the Continuing Healthcare checklist and it will give you an idea of the criteria. It's not social services as BB states. An individual assessor checks, then it goes to a panel, who make the final decision. Social services do not make decisions on NHS!
I agree the cancer care tram team should be able to put you in contact with free short breaks.

Also google free short breaks for carer as a lot of guest house and hotels will give free place when they have them to carers on a bed and breakfast bases and while that normally a long weekend. 4 days are better than two.

Sorry I only have a list for Scotland which would not be of any use unless you lived in Scotland or wanted to come to Scotland.

Try your local hospice as they from time to time do short break funding.

However please note carers centre will not pay for a short break if extended by the person as it deemed they then could afford the break so if you plan on using carers centre and increase the time let them pay theirs first and confirm that booking then ask the company if you can add to it.

From experiences carers centre will only pay up to £300.00 and does not include travel or food. In December 2017 the carers centre paid £300 for a break from Friday to Tuesday for me. I did not get a say in were that was and no money change hands as they paid for it and did not confirm the booking until the Wednesday before I went. I hope you get a better deal and wish you well.

Try the princes trust, Salvation Army and trust for other funding. You can find them by googling them
