SCROUNGERS - Page 2 - Carers UK Forum

Discuss news stories and political issues that affect carers.
Guess i`d better hand back the Rolls Royce, the mansion and the mink jacket now then. Image
I'll have the Supertramp album if you dont need it.
I am making a second bid for the Supertramp album, having tolererated an evening entertainment of Vera Lynn songs and Lilly of Laguna oh JOY Image I think my need is greater than Scallys Image

Chatting to a very bright 90 year old about the entertainment here was quite enlightening actually. He was bored out of his mind by the old songs presented here and was an excellent spokesman for living in the here and now. An open minded jolly old gent he is and very inspirational.

Oh dear .... have i gone off topic? What was the topic exactly? Another problem here in a RAFA home is that a gin and tonic cost one pounds twenty pence but not to worry i expect i will get accustomed to it Image
Being seen as a scrounger, Audrey, and as a long-term SCROUNGER I would like to add my philosophy of life, which is pretty much summed up in this not-quite-so-ancient song, to that of your 90-year old Image :

I just knew it would be that one, Parsifal... Image
The Rolls Royce anybody can have, but the Supertramp album,Crisis What Crisis, sums up life as a carer in the 21st century and has to stay with me.Could always skin the cat if i need another jacket i guess.Oh,and thanks to all the funds i`ve got by being a scrounger, there`s the yacht, villa in Barbados, season ticket for La Scala and private jet.
Hell, just woke up to reality, anybody got a can opener,we`re sharing a tin of baked beans again tonight. Image Image
Seriously though,i`m sure the government purposely puts out these stories so that they can put the idea of anyone on benefits being a scrounger and justify future cuts. Those not in our situation will probably swallow this crap so that their taxes don`t go up,until,of course, they are in our situation.
'Disabled' man filmed dancing http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-15887286

A benefits fraudster who claimed he was bed-ridden yet was filmed dancing at a wedding has been jailed.
Mohamed Bouzalim, 37, cheated the authorities out of nearly £400,000, Isleworth Crown Court heard.
He will serve nearly seven years for 11 counts of deception, fraud and assisting illegal entry into the UK.
The court heard he had also falsely claimed asylum saying he was an Afghan who had been tortured by the Taliban when in fact he was from Morocco.
Bouzalim flew into Heathrow airport in June 2001.
Bouzalim claimed to be from Afghanistan but was in fact Moroccan
He told the authorities he had been tortured, that the Taliban had murdered his father and his mother was dead.
But according to the UK Border Agency (UKBA), he was an illegal migrant from north Africa.
Over the next decade, he used false names, passports, driving licences, and other ID cards to claim almost £400,000 in benefits including money to pay family members to be his full-time carers.
At the height of the scam, he was receiving £66,000 a year tax free and managed to do a masters degree and later study for a PhD at The School of Oriental and African Studies in central London.
Bouzalim pretended he could not walk and was in need of 24-hour care.
He was provided with a specially converted ground floor, two bedroom council flat in Kilburn, north-west London, with wheelchair access.
But during an investigation, Metropolitan Police officers secretly filmed Bouzalim walking unaided from his flat and down the street.
'Top class fraudster'
When they raided the purpose-built property they found a video of him dancing at his wedding in Morocco in 2009.
Robert Coxhead, senior investigating officer from the UKBA Criminal and Financial Investigation team, said: "Mohamed Bouzalim was a top class fraudster and con artist. His whole life was a lie."
The agency added that it was because of the "overwhelming weight of evidence" including the wedding video, that he admitted his crimes.
He received £137,602 from north London's Camden Council to pay for his carers, around £70,000 in housing benefit, £60,000 from the Independent Living Fund, £74,000 in income support and £15,000 disability living allowance.
Instead of his parents being dead, they in fact came to the UK on visitor visas and then allegedly acted as his carers.
They now live in London and claim pension tax credits and housing benefit, totalling about £2,000 a month.
But Bouzalim also owned a property in Leyton, east London, which he rented out for £1,200 a month.
"I think it's outrageous," said Mr Coxhead.
"What's worse about it is there are so many needy people out there who perhaps don't have the access to the benefits they should do and here is a man perfectly able, an intelligent man and he's deceived a number of different organisations."
Bouzalim, who speaks six languages including the Afghan language Pashto, was given exceptional leave to remain when he arrived in the UK in 2001.
He was granted indefinite leave to remain in April 2007 and granted British Citizenship in June 2009.
At Isleworth Crown Court, he admitted 11 counts of deception, fraud and assisting illegal entry into the UK.

Three other family members pleaded guilty to defrauding Camden Council.

Camden Council and the Department for Work and Pensions have both been contacted by BBC London but have not responded regarding the case.

The UKBA says it will now look to deport Mr Bouzalim, who was jailed for six years and 11 months.
I am not sure what the point of this story is other than to illustrate that this man was an exceptionally good actor which most claimants are not, it certainly does not indicate that fraud is endemic in the disability and carers benefits system or that the majority of claimants are scroungers, the government's own statistics prove otherwise.

This case is exceptional in that it was fraud on an industrial scale carried out by a man, along with his family, who went out of his way to defraud every system available to people with disabilities, not just the benefits system, using false IDs and who succeeded in convincing a number of organisations, and their medical assessors, that he was severely disabled and in need of care.
to me it shows that carers and many elderly/young disabled do not deserve to be classed as scroungers, we over the years have jumped over the hurdles and through the hoops to claim all we are entitled to -after many years as tax payers - yet we still have means tested benefits that stop many from receiving help and support yet some can claim and claim and con the various departments i have supported the asylum seekers and those who are persecuted but this kind of family will turn the public against future support for them, they are not even economic refugees they are just thieves ..send em back ... will be the response and why not ???
I really do not think that you can differentiate between disabled and carer benefit claimants and other benefit claimants in this way, the majority are honest as we are and have contributed as we have and to suggest otherwise is, rightly, as unjust and objectionable to them as it is to us.
and scally wonders why many dont reply to posts on the forum...have i in some way diferentiated between the disabled and carers?? in my post i have said many of us have paid tax`s and have all done the honest thing when it comes to claiming benefits ..i was refering to the one family who have been prosecuted and found guilty of many frauds ..sometimes i wonder if it is worth me commenting on anything at all if every time i am persued by those who are always right ....as i have said before it aint just a forum it is more like the Spanish inquestion ...is it worth the hassle ??
Your too sensitive George, most people enjoy reading both sides of a discussion irrespective of who they think is right or wrong. On this particular thread I would agree with you send them back, but also agree with P who wonders what point is being made? are we all dancing scroungers?
