Odd bedfellows ???

DWP and both our supprting organisations ... the mind boggles ???

None have any guidance for those needing to access the services provided by any of the food banks published prominently on their sites.

I can understand why the DWP would be hesitant .... after all , only a couple of years ago they were flatly denying food banks even existed. A little later on , they denied being the main culprits for increasing the number of our fellow citizens needing their services.

Even blaming the users for poor financial mangement. Some I can agree with but not in the way their statement read ... just a sweeping generalisation.

Somewhat strange given the numbers involved ???

In our case , our fellow carers ... many more than both organisations combined.

Both our supporting organisations can only look at the numbers.

How both wish they had such numbers .....

Carers are ... carers ... some better off than the majority who are not.

Not knowing , or not wanting to know , them are two distinctly different issues.

One can sympathy in the complexities of identifying carers , but no excuse for the constant delays.

There is no excuse whatsoever for any organisation not providing even a token signpost for the most disadvantaged in economic terms amongst it's flock.

Just one distribution centre , there are now many more across the country.

How many cans and other packages in this picture alone are destined for our fellow carers ?

Carers Week will shortly be with us,

I wonder what the carers using their local food bank will make of the activities and festivities , and the food on offer , some of which may be just a memory ??????????
More news , usual source , the Guardian , fears of the cost of food rising causing many more , mainly working ones , to fall through what's now left of that so called safety net.

600+ comments ..... read some and weep ?

Just one , more readable and observant than most others :

Food poverty is not just a UK problem but can also be observed in Germany. It is not uncommon for school teachers to provide food to hard-up children or going as far as providing shoes and clothing in extreme cases. While our obscene governments misuse the term 'equality' to great extend it makes me wonder how much money it would take to become equal in society? Lets not forget that money buys everything.

Nevertheless, food poverty, low income and zero hour contracts are the norm nowadays be it here in the UK or elsewhere. It is a sad sign of our times and much worse is still to come as the fabric of our societies is reverting back to medieval times.

It wouldn't surprise me if Trussells and others put out an urgent sos for rolller skates ... to help their over worked volunteers to carer for the increasing numbers turning up.

Even a couple of mouth fulls for those waiting towards the back of the queue.

What next ? Volunteer secutity guards in case supplies run out with a couple of hundred needing supplies still in the queue ?

Local carer groups putting signs up " Sorry ! Nearest food bank ? Up the road , turn left , you'll see the queue. Want a few leaflets which may help you whilst you wait ? A Carer Assessment perhaps , waiting list for that now down to 6 months ! It's Carers Week shortly. Want to make a token donation ? "

I wonder how long that sign lasted ... to the nearest second ?

It's happening across the county today , folks.
In Cornwall , dialing 999 ... police , fire , ambulance , food bank .... ???

Urgent appeal for supplies after more starving families turn to food banks in Wadebridge and Bodmin

Foodbanks in Wadebridge, Bodmin and Camelford have issued a desperate appeal for supplies to feed starving local families.

The food banks said they urgently needed supplies as they were currently struggling to fill the food boxes being given to people in crisis in the local community.

In the past 12 months the branches distributed 26.5 tonnes of food but only received 23 tonnes in donations, forcing them to dip into their final reserves.

What's next folks ?
Another local story , this time from Dewsbury , West Yorkshire , and a link up with Boots for toiletries and basic hygiene items donations :

Started with food banks , now energy and basic essentials almost across the whole spectrum needed to survive in this Very Sad New World.

By 2020 , probably be the largest chain of anything in the UK.

And just what does that tell you about priorities as maybe gleamed from our political masters of all colours ?

In addition , what does that also tell you about our supporting organisations who still do not include visible guidance to anyone of us that has fallen through what's left of that safety net ?

Turning a blind eye to what's happening throughout CarerLand and CareeLand , pursuing their own agendas at the expense of all need help and guidance just to be able to survive the ever increasing grip of austerity.

Campaigns /priorities ? Ours are detailed in the Campaigns Section ... want to compare notes ?

A mere £ 400 / 500 million in ours , and pretty strong cases as well ... on initial reading , an intrepretation of the Law supports both.

All done through determination and a few emails , and at no cost to anyone other than in time. No reward sought , merely a small contribution towards easing the Plight of carers.

Take your pick ... as detailed on our recruitment poster hanging on the wall ?

The beginnings of a new Carers Manifesto ... 10 years almost since The Carers Letter ... and what precisely has changed over that period ???

Carers Allowance ? Oh yes ... by some £ 14 per week ! ... apologies for forgetting that !

Passing the hat around ? It's US that need to pass the hat around !!!

Do we need to take them all on ???????????????

Malnutrition ?

Separate thread which asks some poignant questions :

http://www.carersuk.org/forum/news-camp ... rers-29223
Hiya Chris, Totally agree. I've had to use food banks 10 times in the last 2/3. The situation is dire and the mad thing is I really 'felt' degraded having to use them. The truth is you are coz you 'have to take what's given'. I am grateful don't get me wrong. Yes, I know a single mother who's working part-time that has had to use a food bank due to 'cuts'.
As posted under another thread in the News Section ... Sheffield ... low paid workers are standing shoulder to shoulder with carers and carees ... the Food Bank Army ( FBA ) is growing ... gradually creeping up the so called income scale.

http://www.carersuk.org/forum/news-camp ... m-me-29352

Like Japanese Knotweed , once established , there's virtually no way of stopping it ...

If someone said mere scaremongering , I would just direct them to have a real good look outside into their manor to see what is actually happening !

There are many places one tends to hide one's identity before entering.

Despite what our parents / grandparents thought about charity ... died with the Victorians ... we , the present , living , generation have no option other than to rewrite the script !!!!

Survival is all that matters for far too many of our fellow citizens.

There's nothing " Too proud " about needing food and heat to do just that !
Latest press release from Trussells ... and it's both very revealing and depressing :

https://www.trusselltrust.org/2016/04/1 ... cord-high/

Plenty of information that reveals a truly grim picture , stark reality for far too many.

David McAuley, Chief Executive of The Trussell Trust says:

“Today’s figures on national foodbank use prove that the numbers of people hitting a crisis where they cannot afford to buy food are still far too high.

One million three day food supplies given out by our foodbanks every year is one million too many.

This must not become the new normal.

Reducing UK hunger will require a collective effort from the voluntary sector, Government, DWP, businesses and the public, and The Trussell Trust is keen to work with all these groups to find solutions that stop so many people needing foodbanks in future.

An invite that CANNOT be ignored ... carers hear you only too loud and clear , as do our carees ... anyone else we know ?????????

#############################################################

Email ... Hi , Trussell Trust here .... we have been needing your support since ... 2004 ... and can give direct support for those beneficiaries of your charity that have fallen through the safety net .... are you ready to reply ?

Hello , anyone out there ? Hello ...............

Not forgetting the separate Malnutrition Amongst Carers Thread ... interlinked ?

Talking of which , the present Survey doing the rounds will highlight these issues ... won't it ?
As an comparison , our Irish neighbours and measures that are being taken :

https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/irel ... bankds-320

Food banks pop up like melanomas on a sick society. Last week, Ireland opened a giant food bank to cope with the 600,000 people living in food poverty. According to data on Material Deprivation published by the European Commission, Ireland comes in at number three on the list of most deprived countries in the EU-15 – just after Greece and Italy. This means that one million people, or 28 percent of the Irish population, struggle to provide themselves with heat, shelter, food and bills.

Bia, Ireland's first giant food distribution hub, was launched last Friday in Munster. What makes it different is that, rather than a community response to a failing state, Bia comes with state backing – €267,000 (£210,650) of backing from the Department of Social Protection over the next three years. Joan Burton, Ireland's minister for Social Protection and Leader of the Irish Labour Party, opened the centre, to little media attention.

The whole article makes interesting reading.

And a damning indiciment of the Government's and most supporting social care charities's ( non ) reaction to the problem here in the UK including the malnutrition element which remains unaddressed or even mentioned !
Today's Guardian :

Charity calls for immediate reduction in six-week wait for first benefit payment after handing out 1,182,954 emergency parcels

In essense , the problems in rolling out Universal Credit , and the built in time delays.

Plenty of updated information within the article.

A Department for Work and Pensions spokesman said: “The reasons for food bank use are complex, so it’s misleading to link them to any one issue. Employment is the best route out of poverty, and there are now record numbers of people in work. Under universal credit people are moving into work faster and staying in work longer than under the old system.

Oh dear , same old party line ... used at Nuremberg perhaps ?

Arbeit Macht Frei !

Fine .... now , what about those who cannot ???

What's your answer that's acceptable in the 21st. century ???

A little more on the recent Trussells report and the clear link between the rollout of UC , and the delay in receiving it :

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/ho ... 03451.html

Not much to add , clearly a foreseeable problem which was totally ignored by the policy makers.

A word I haven't used before ... malice ... springs to mind.

They knew exactly what they were doing .....
