The Archbishop of Canterbury today gives his backing to the Mirror's Caring for Carers campaign.

Dr Rowan Williams agreed that carers should be guaranteed proper support and respite breaks - and called on the Government to urgently review the carers' benefits system.

He said: "It's all too easy to forget the enormous amount of work done by voluntary carers in this country.

"I wholeheartedly support the campaign and wish it every success."

The support from the Archbishop - who is vice-president of the charity Carers UK - comes after nearly 70 MPs signed a Commons motion calling for extra aid for carers.

It highlights the Carers Poverty Charter, which was drawn up by Carers UK and calls for a shake up of carers' benefits.

It has already won the support of more than 200 organisations. Mike Hobday, from Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "Carers can be financially crippled by the costs of cancer, especially if they have to stop work to care for their loved one. It's vital that Carer's Allowance is increased."
First they came for the communists ,and i did not speak out - because i was not a communist.

Then they came for the socialists ,and i did not speak out -because i was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and i did not speak out -because i was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and i did not speak out-as i was not a Jew.

Then they came for me , and there was no one left to speak for me .

ive done 12 years now 9 years looking after 2 adults since 1997 ive had 5 weeks on my own even then the local authority care home was so bad we took STAN out every day from that day on we vowed local authority - social services are not fit for purpose and as far as i can see nowts changed since then dont we have a choice as to the kind of and level of care we need - but so be it who cares .
Carers care in a nutshell................. its not just the physical application of care its also the mental capacity to caring more often than not I oversee a wife who wants to help with my life but cannot understand, she sees the physical side of caring of watching me doing the housework and attending to her persons needs but...no-one no matter who abled or disabled
can see through emotional torment and troubles that befall a carer.
That is why nobody understands DISABLEMENT until it happens to A FAMILY UNIT some see it born into the unit, others go through life blissfully unaware until the emotional turmoil calls.
It seems that without having the experience of disability no-one cares or is much bothered by the tragedies that befall people young and old as I remember years gone by if you were different shall we say you were hidden out of sight or perish the thought put away in an Institution ........now in these more enlightened times we may be more aware but still cant comprehend the turmoil of disability and i think this also applies to many many of the political arena

Disability is an emotional and physical upheaval of life which can be enlightening and humbling
in the knowledge that you CARE
