Call out for participants: 'Arts & Biscuits'

Arts & Disability Forum is currently setting up a new arts programme for individuals with early stage dementia or Alzheimer’s to get involved.

The programme will involve a small group of 16 people, eight of whom are at the early stages of dementia, each with a friend, family member or carer, meeting regularly at the ADF Gallery in Belfast to experiment with the visual arts, dance, music and creative writing.

What it’s about
As the name might suggest, we want to bring individuals and artists together to chat and explore different artworks and presentations over a cup of tea and biscuits (and cake!), in an informal but informative setting, with a chance to join in. This will help introduce the ADF as a resource for people with dementia.

Each session will be led by artistic facilitators from a range of people working in different areas of the arts, all of whom have received dementia-related training. A great range of art forms will be covered across the sessions, in a space that is understanding and comfortable for all participants.

We are particularly keen to work with participants who have an existing or newly developed interest in the arts and we will devise the activities around the interests of the group.

Where and when?
Meeting once a month in our gallery space at our offices on Royal Avenue, Belfast, we will be starting off with two groups of eight (four individuals plus four carers). These will meet on either the first or second Monday of each month, depending on which group you are in. Dates for the initial sessions will be confirmed soon.

Initially, each session is set to run for one hour, at 2pm on each Monday. After a few months, once relations have been established a bit, the two groups will combine into one, and each session will then be for an hour and a half, meeting on the second Monday.
