My petition:

Make Public Transport Disabled Friendly

When using public transport such as a bus there needs to be a huge improvement in helping make them disabled friendly. In my experience a lot of bus drivers complain and on occasion make a scene when having to take down the ramp to allow wheelchair users access to the bus.

On the bus there is a yellow safety rail which comes down to help keep wheelchair in place however the majority in my experience have been bolted and unable to be used. This means that when bus is driving fast the wheelchair slides all over the place even with the breaks on and at times crashing into other passengers/ Prams or seats which can cause damage to the chair. More awareness is needed to solve these issues.

Hello Amanda,

I appreciate the work you are doing to make public transport more disability friendly. You mentioned on the bus there is a yellow safety rail which comes down to help keep the wheelchair in place. I haven't seen one of these before but they sound very interesting. Do you have any pictures of these? If so can you please post the image.

I know in the US they have WTORS systems in buses in where the wheelchair is secured to the bus as well as the wheelchair user. This is to prevent people in wheelchairs to slide around and them falling out of their chair while in the bus.

Regards,
